Newsletter, JUNE 2006 ISSUE NO. 3
ATMentors Marketing Contest ATMentors is proud to debut our new logo. This logo was the winner of our ATMentors Marketing Contest. The logo was created by Brad Dressler, a graphic design artist who works at the Association of Former Students. Congratulations to Brad, and thank you to everyone who participated by submitting entries or serving as judges for the contest. Watch for new placards and bookmarks (for current ATMentors) displaying our new logo coming soon! NEW WEBSITE (Back to Top) ATMentors has a new website! In this age of electronic communication and the internet, we felt that it was important that our website be a first priority in our marketing efforts. If you visit our new website (same address) http://atmentors.tamu.edu you will notice that we have updated the look and navigation of the website. Our hope is that through this new site, resources will be easily accessible for mentors as well as students searching for mentors. Please visit the site and let us know if there are any additional resources that you would like to see, or if there are any suggestions that you may have for improvements. Send questions, comments and suggestions to atmentors@tamu.edu. REMINDER TO RENEW YOUR ATMENTORS MEMBERSHIP (Back to Top) When you visit our new website, there is a page called ‘Find a Mentor’. The list of mentors on this page displays those active mentors who have filled out their renewal form for the 2006-2007 year. We want everyone to continue their role as an ATMentor, so if you are not yet on this page and want to continue your membership as an ATMentor, please fill out your renewal form by visiting the website at: http://atmentors.tamu.edu/forms/mentorupdate.htm. Please be patient with the update time and allow five business days for updates, as this form does not automatically update our website. Please note that if you have not renewed by July 1 you will be reclassified in our database as ‘Former’ ATMentor and will no longer receive any of our communications. FUTURE MARKETING PLANS (Back to Top) Now that we have an updated website and have a brand new logo, ATMentors is going to begin developing a new marketing campaign that we hope to debut in the fall. This will begin with new ATMentors placards, bookmarks, magnets, and posters for display across campus. If you have ideas, suggestions, or a great location for advertisement please send those to atmentors@tamu.edu. CAMPUS HIGHLIGHT-SUMMER IN AGGIELAND (Back to Top) To help you in serving your students, we hope to include a campus highlight section in future editions of this newsletter. This section will provide you with resources to help your students or ideas for their involvement, participation, and development. As summer time is here that means new hours of operation and services, this edition will focus on summer hours and locations for Food Services, parking on campus, and updated Rec Center hours. Food Services: This summer Food Services has a variety of dining locations open and a select amount of hours that they are available for you. Please visit http://food.tamu.edu/facilities/hours.html to get an up to date look at what is open for you this summer! Transportation Services: Due to the construction projects happening on campus this summer, you may want to make note of what parking lots and streets on campus are impacted. Visit http://transport.tamu.edu/construction.aspx for a look at the various areas that campus construction will effect. Also take a look at http://transport.tamu.edu/specialevents/nsc.aspx to help with answering questions from new students about New Student Conference Parking. Recreational Sports Center: If you or your students are in town and want to utilize the Rec Center facilities, note that they have summer hours (see below). Also visit http://recsports.tamu.edu/fitness/Schedule/schedule.htm for their summer group exercise schedule. Summer 2006 Semester Hours: May 29 – August 10
We would like to offer a huge thank you to all of those ATMentors who have volunteered their time to work at our ATMentors table for New Student Conferences. Your time and the energy that you give to those incoming students may very well be an essential factor in their success as students and our success in getting the word out about our program! Thank you for volunteering! WELCOME TO NEW ATMENTORS (Back to Top) ATMentors has not had any new mentors since March- that means that we all need to be recruiting in our areas and offices. Take a few minutes to go to the ATMentors website and click on Find a Mentor to see who is represented in your college or department and go out and recruit! Also encourage those who are in the database to renew their membership see above. WHERE YOUR STUDENTS ARE IN THE CYCLE (Back to Top) In an effort to aid you in connecting with your students as an ATMentor, the Executive Board recommended that we provide for you some insight as to the cycle that students go through and where they are at specific times in the year. The following is a quick look at some of the issues your students may be experiencing currently. According to student development theory, students go through a developmental cycle that coincides with the changing of the seasons and semesters. As we enter into June, those students who have chosen to stay for summer school are having a range of experiences. For some the longer more intense classes lead to difficulties focusing and the lure of ‘summer vacation’ just outside the building leads to greater frustrations and lack of attention. For others they are excited about being able to get classes out of the way that may have been perceived as more difficult during the longer fall or spring semesters, and this chance to really focus on one or two classes is a relief. Socially, there are long distance relationships to deal with as students experience being in one place while their significant others may have left or stayed behind for the summer. Additionally, there are summer romances and a chance to spend more time socializing due to fewer hours dedicated to studying, and involvement activities. Some students may be experiencing frustrations over money and pressure to find summer employment may be experienced especially with loans and scholarships that may already be spent or not cover summer classes. CAMPS FOR FRESHMEN AND TRANSFER STUDENTS (Back to Top) While the official New Student Conferences are officially underway, student leaders on campus are busily planning for optional extended orientation sessions to benefit both freshmen (Fish Camp) and transfer students (T-Camp). Both of these camps focus on teaching incoming students what it means to be an Aggie from a student perspective. Both camps are now open for online registration. If you have freshmen that are interested in attending Fish Camp please refer them to the Fish Camp website at http://fishcamp.tamu.edu/. For additional information please read below. If you have transfer students that are interested in attending T-Camp this summer please refer them to the T-Camp website at http://t-camp.tamu.edu/. Please note that T-Camp has made a few changes this year in response to student feedback and their sessions will now be three days and two nights instead of the previous four day format. SUBMIT ITEMS FOR NEXT ATMENTORS NEWSLETTER (Back to Top) If you have items that you feel should be included in the next ATMentors newsletter. Please send them in a word document to atmentors@tamu.edu . The Office of New Student Programs does not guarantee that all submissions will be included, but that all will be reviewed for possible inclusion. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please send those as well to
